Fashion shows

Mali-born and Parisian-based designer Lamine Kouyaté presented his new collection during NYFW SS2017. His was one of the earlier shows of the day with a scheduled start of 10am. By the time the backstage opens to the press things are in full swing with production crews working away, and models sitting at hair and makeup stations. Everyone is busy, there is some fun as well, after all Kelly Osbourne is backstage as well getting the same hair and makeup treatment as the models. the mood is light and fun, though there is a frenzy of activity around her. In the front row is Spike Lee wearing a Colin Kaepernick Jersey. There is an electricity in the air as it gets closer to the start of the show. Lamine launched his line, Xuly Bet, in the late 80's..

Xuly Bët is famous throughout the world for vibrant combinations of pattern, prints, and brilliant color. This collection was no different. pairing of color, and pattern had a hint of the bohemian, especially the colorful leggings. The striking colors of jackets, and prints complemented the bright pattern printed sunglasses being worn by the models. The accessories were strong in this collection, and the head wraps gave the outfits a distinctly "Afropolitan" flavor.

Kouyaté's collection was dedicated to his native country of Mali. He also acknowledged that the collection is also dedicated to his 86- year-old mother. She was of Mali's first female doctors and was involved with the fight for women's rights. We are pleased to see Lamine return to the runway of NYFW for his second show. It was in September, 2015 that he signaled his return with a pop up presentation; using the street in front of the Moynihan station as his runway. it was the perfect show to start the day of shows. We can't wait to see what next season holds, we will definitely be there to find out.

* Caribbean Posh would like to extend our thanks to Kelly Cutrone, and the staff of People's Revolution for our access to cover Xuly Bet
