By :- R. Anthony Morrison

For three days in July, New Yorkers get a look at the latest trends in African fashion. The Adiree Agency, headed by Adiat Disu and her team produces AFWNY. Her mission is  to provide opportunites for established and emerging designers to present and market  their collections. This year, Adiree highlighted themes of sustainability, and ethical fashion. The designers presented collections on July 18, 19, and 20th at the Broad Street Ball Room in Manhattan's financial district.  Sixteen designers from various African nations and the diaspora presented collections. Here's a list of this year's designers; Sarfo Of Styles, Bill Witherspoon, Sara Karay, Eaden Myles, Liz Ogumbo for SFGK, Aliakim Mikaila Brown, Ms. Ray Couture, Demetiks NYC, Sana Redwani, Admas Mahdere, Farai Simoyi, Sydney - Davies, Cinnamon & Pearl, Catherine Addai, Maze Couture, and Khadija Morroccan Caftan NY. The designers didn't dissapoint and we would be hard pressed to do all the designers justice here. Still we would like to mention some of our favorites.

We have to give love to Sarfo Of Styles whose elegant and graceful designs express the fusion of mofern African influenced style.  His gowns would be right at home on the red carpet, and his menswear reflected his heritage while maintaing a modern cosmopolitan ease.  Bill Witherspoon has presented collections at AFWNY from it's inception. Witherspoon's designs are for men who are not afraid to stand out. As he says " I don't design for the fashionably timid." His designs scream free spirit, and world traveler. With Bill witherspoon, fashion favors the bold. Farai Simoyi designs are chic and cosmopolitan. She uses rich colors, and graphic patterns that reflect her her culture, and complement her global sense of style.

Born in Kenya and living in South Africa, Liz Ogumbo's designs have been called elegant and cutting edge. Her designs have a diverse appeal and are speak to the fashion forward woman. her collection featured bold color and gold metallic fabrics that move like liquid metal help make her designs a runway standout. She has partnered with Saris For Good karma to promote the concept of ethical fashion. This collaboration resulted in the collection presented at this yearsAFWNY; Rekebisha. A big POSH salute to all the designers of Africa Fashion Week New York. We also salute Adiree for continuing to provide this important platform.
