Miss World Guyana : The Road To China

By :- Caribbean POSH

Today (November 19th) the beautiful Lisa Punch of Georgetown Guyana begins the biggest part of her journey as Miss World -Guyana -- as she heads for Sanya,China to represent Guyana in the Miss World Pageant. We caught up with Miss World -Guyana  on November 12, during a Guyanese consulate grand send off party that featured a vocal performance by the very talented amabassendor.

Her speech to the attendees spoke about hope and her desire to help the young people of Guyana. She has a very strong commitment to suicide prevention which is serious issue affecting Guyana's youth. Her ultimate goal is to use the Miss World pageant as a platform to advocate for the prevention of teen suicide. Miss World-Guyana is definitely not just another pretty face; she also has a beautiful heart. The new Miss World will be crowned in late December. We wish Miss World-Guyana all the best with her quest for the crown.

P : How long will you be in China, what are you most looking forward to?

L.P : I'll be in china for a month, I've never been to Asia before. I'm looking forward to learning new cultures because it's going to be so beautiful to be in a country like China. All of us are coming from different cultures. its going to be a melting pot where we get to enjoy each others culture.

P: Tell us about the selection process, what are the judges looking for?

L.P : There is a lot of work in it. There is concept of "beauty with a purpose". The young woman has to posses the qualities of a leader in her community. She should be someone who stands for positive change. Someone who works for a cause, and is fighting to make her community better. There is also a talent segment, and I'll be singing of course.

: When did you start singing ?

LP : I've been singing since I was six years old. I started signing professionally at the age of 11.

P : What are some of the other criteria for winning the Miss World Pageant?

L.P : There are interviews with the judges. There is a top model competition. there is no swimsuit segment. There is a beach wear segment in which you wear beach wear, but you're not showing a lot of your skin. So it's all about honoring, the woman, the lady.

P : You are very involved with suicide prevention in Guyana, is that correct?

L.P :  Yes,  I started an organization for the prevention of teenage suicide in Guyana also known as POTS Guyana. What many people don't know is that  Guyana has the highest suicide rate in the world per capita. I didn't feel that enough was being done about it.  I decided that I wanted to use the miss world pageant to talk about it.

P : You have made an effort to focus on teens in Guyana, why is that?

L.P Because they are feeling hopeless, and we need someone to let them know that it's going to be alright. To say I've been there before, I know what you're going through, and don't give up. We have our own website and facebook page, and we get a lot of messages from young people. Among other things we help with referrals to mental health counseling.

P: What are some of the things you would like to do in the future with regards to your work with suicide prevention?

L.P : I want to study psychology, I want to be a psychologist. I've always wanted to be an entertainer. I still want to do it. I want to be a psychologist now more than ever. I want to be able to help people, I believe that is  my  purpose.

P: What do you say to the girls, and young women who ask you about competing in pageants?

L.P : I tell them that the Miss World pageant is the best pageant a young girl could enter. I don't say that to discredit any other pageant. I feel that the Miss World pageant is one that looks beyond the physical appearance They care about who she is on the inside. it's about what she has to offer, and how she inspires others. I tell them, that is what they should aim for. It's not just having a beautiful face but should also have a beautiful heart.

P : What would you like to say to all of the people who will be following your journey at the Miss World Pageant?

L.P : To all the people who have been supporting me,please continue to support me I am so so honored to be representing Guyana at the Miss world pageant. I feel proud to represent Guyana anywhere in the world.
