It’s been a minute since you may have heard the phrase “Netflix and Chill”, but it seems this is very much still a thing. With Valentine’s Day coming up, what better way to spend the love-filled holiday than curling up with your better half to watch a few romantic movies to set the mood. Here are 4 of the best romantic movies to watch on Valentine’s Day that will leave you with all the heart eyes. Don’t forget the snacks!
1. If Beale Street Could Talk

Released in 2018, this film stars Kiki Layne, Stephen James, Regina King, and others, and is based on James Baldwins’ 1974 novel of the same name. In this story, we follow Tish and Fonny, who are childhood friends turned to lovers trying to make ends meet in 1970s Harlem. We see Fonny and Tish’s friendship develop and heighten in a lot of intimate and wonderful scenes. However, the couple also faces a lot of turmoil in the future. When Fonny is falsely accused of a crime, Tish goes to the ends of the earth trying to make things right. We love this film because of its lovely music, tender moments, and powerful message.
2. You People

If you are looking for something romantic and with tons of funny moments, You People is one of Netflix’s newest offerings to the rom-com genre. Having just released in January of this year, the film stars actors Jonah Hill, Lauren London, Eddie Murphy, and more. You People centers around Amira and Ezra, an interracial couple who try to navigate their relationship with completely opposite upbringings. She is black and Muslim, while Ezra is white and Jewish. As their parents clash with each other and the couple themselves, will the young couple’s relationship be able to pass the tests placed on them? This film is the perfect film to watch if you’re in the mood for romance and laughs!
3. The Lovebirds

If you are still looking for a romantic film with both comedy and thrills, The Lovebirds starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanijani may be just what you’re looking for! Jibran and Leilani are a couple who seem to be heading toward an inevitable breakup and we see this play out on the screen. They constantly argue with each other and don’t seem to have a lot of good moments. The pair even decide to call it quits one night while going to a dinner party. However, that same night they are caught in a murder and must work together to clear their names when they believe the police are after them. Will trying to solve this crime and find their innocence be enough to bring this couple together again? Issa Rae and Kumail Nanijani make a hilarious duo, and we enjoy seeing their two characters have a shot at love again (with a lot of unexpected twists involved)!
4. Resort to Love

This film stars Cristina Milian, Jay Pharoah, and others, exploring the story of aspiring pop star, Erica. Erica’s just been bailed on by her music producer, and she’s feeling incredibly under the weather as she also is thinking about her ex-fiance. Erica’s influencer friend books her a gig working as an entertainer at an upscale tropical resort. While at the resort, Erica runs into her ex-fiance, Jason, who is getting married at the resort. Erica also strikes up an encounter with Jason’s estranged brother, Caleb. It looks like Erica’s resort stay just got a little more crowded than she hoped. This is the perfect romance film if you enjoy chance encounters and music (fun fact: Alicia Keys was a producer and we even see her song “No One” covered in the film)!
Valentine’s Day calls for spending time with your loved ones and reveling in feelings of love and gratitude for those around you! If you are thinking of winding the day down with a movie night with your boo, then the films mentioned above would be great choices if you just don’t feel like scrolling through Netflix’s endless selection. Whether you’re looking for something a bit more dramatic, a few thrills, or to laugh while watching romance unfold, you may want to check one of the movies out!
Trying to think of fun activities to do while your movie pick plays in the background? You can:
- Cook a lovely dinner for two (this is the perfect opportunity to try that new recipe you may have been wanting to attempt!)
- Make something sweet to enjoy with the movie (we’re thinking chocolate-covered strawberries, cupcakes, or s’mores)
- Merge your movie night with a spa night (do face masks, massages, and anything else to pamper you and your partner)
So settle in, grab your blankets and pillow, and enjoy an intimate and relaxed night in with your favorite person. Which movie will you be watching?
