Naked dresses have been a full-blown force in the fashion industry for a number of years, popular on runways and supermodels since the early 90s, and notably popularized on the red carpet by Kim Kardashian and her crew in the last decade. Rihanna solidified the trend as one of the most memorable in modern times with her famous, unforgettable 2014 CFDA Awards naked ensemble. But where can we go once everything has already been taken off? Enter the best “naked” dress looks of 2019. These looks are all spins on the “naked” red carpet dress- still sexy, still daring, but with some added creativity to keep the trend fresher than (nothing but) your birthday suit.

Jourdan Dunn was chic and sheer for a Maybelline Cosmetics launch party in April of this year. Her “naked” look actually featured a high neck and conservative knee-length hemline. Aside from the shin-grazing tassel trim and metallic glint, this look could almost be demure— on first glance. The gold crochet was in fact almost entirely see-through, featuring a simple black bikini panty and the stunning model au naturel. Dunn completed the look with polished black heels, a full cascade of natural curls and her supermodel smile.

Zoe Kravitz looked radiant for the annual Vanity Fair Golden Globes afterparty this spring. Although she skipped the main event, Kravitz’s look was among the most memorable of the evening, thanks to her arrestingly bare and shockingly sumptuous outfit. Zoe wore a real 18 Karat gold Tiffany & Co bra top designed by Elsa Peretti, which carries a jaw-dropping price tag of $25,000 USD. Her simple Yves Saint Laurent column skirt and evening bag balanced the outfit’s coverage.

Winnie Harlow is no stranger to showing skin- the supermodel’s striking Vitiligo is one of her most recognizable and beloved traits. She wore this Ralph & Russo gown on the Cannes red carpet, on her way to attend a film screening. A veil of black mesh enveloped her figure, covered only by a Rorschach-blot of green and black crystals, tastefully encrusted in just the right places. She finished the look with a green belt, matching heels and a pop of purple eye shadow.

Valentino’s Spring 2019 Couture show is always a special, stunning, swooned over spectacle of fashion’s hautest of haute couture, and this year was all the more buzzed about. Of course, we’re talking about Naomi Campbell’s triumphant return to the runway— after 14 years in retirement— to grace us as the show’s coveted closing model. She wore a custom evening gown of black organza and tulle. While this wasn’t a red carpet moment, the world was definitely watching as Naomi confidently hit the runway and proved that nothing has changed except the clothing. Thank you, our timeless fashion fairy godmother.

Kim Kardashian has worn many a naked dress in her day, but this is perhaps her best. For the 2019 Met Gala, where the theme was Camp, Kim was her usual larger-than-life sensual self. She wore the nude dress to end all nude dresses, made of corseted latex matching her skin tone and covered in dripping crystals. The dress was the first design by industry titan Thierry Mugler for his namesake fashion house in over 20 years, bringing Mr. Mugler out of retirement and taking eight months to create. Coupled with her clear heels, slicked hair and oiled skin, Kim was the very vision of Mugler’s concept: a California girl, coming out of the ocean dripping wet and entirely nude. Although we’re sure the naked dress look is here to stay for the time being, it’s tough to imagine how anyone can top Kim and Mugler!
