The world’s eyes were on New York Fashion Week as a sequence of shows unfolded between September 9 and 14 in numerous locations across the city, and Jamaican icons, Usain Bolt, Elaine Thompson-Herah, and Spice all played their respective roles in the success of the five-day event.
New York Fashion Week was a commemoration and proud display of the work of some of the world’s most talented fashion designers, including Tommy Hilfiger, The Blonds, Rebecca Minkoff, Christian Siriano, Telfar, Gabriella Hearst, LaQuan Smith, Batsheva, and Collina Strada.
Strutting down the runway were iconic models such as Gigi and Bella Hadid, as well as, Winnie Harlow, with a surprise presentation from British actress Kate Beckinsale. The latter made her runway debut, modeling a scintillating abstract two-piece metallic outfit, during the Naeem Khan show. Also gracing the esteemed catwalk were the Olympic 100m champions and fastest man and woman alive, respectively, Usain Bolt, and Elaine Thompson-Herah.
The Jamaican track and field legends were among the event’s highlights as they modeled for Puma, dressed in apparel designed as part of the brand’s FUTROGRADE showcase, organized by creative director June Ambrose. The goal of the new line is to explore Puma’s heritage while spotlighting the company’s intention and direction for upcoming designs.
Bolt looked sleek in a waist-length, cropped blazer, accentuated by bold white lines on the sleeves. The piece was paired with matching Puma-branded sweatpants and an intricate white tuxedo shirt, complemented by a classic black bow tie. The legend, who hails from the parish of Trelawny, completed his walk with his signature “To the World” move, sharing the following caption on his Instagram, “Just A Kid From The Country Living The Dream #PumaFutrograde #nyfw @puma.”
Thompson-Herah remarked that she fulfilled a life-long dream when she strode across the New York Fashion Week runway. She walked confidently, boasting an oversized blue coat with cut-out sleeves, worn over a patterned leotard with matching gloves and knee-high boots for the finishing touch. Expressing the immense joy she felt on her Instagram, the double sprint champion wrote, “Top gal. Country gal. Dream of walking the runaway finally came through.”
Queen of Dancehall, Spice, made sure her presence was felt as she arrived at the Laquan Smith fashion show clad in a sparkling turtle-neck body-con dress, alongside long-time friends Lala Anthony and Dr. Meda Montana. For Smith’s Spring 2023 Ready-To-Wear runway show after party, held at The Blond in New York, Spice proceeded to ignite the room with a memorable performance of her hit song So Mi Like It and Clap Clap, off her sophomore album, Emancipated.
The Black Hypocrisy singer arrived at the occasion dressed in an unreleased black and green bodysuit designed by Laquan Smith. She shared the room with Karreuche Tran—who danced along with the star—as well as world-renowned model Winnie Harlow, who is of Jamaican ancestry. Also present were Babyface, Diplo, Madonna, and droves of people enjoying the scene.
During her performance, Spice made use of the DJ Booth which became her stage as she entertained guests while twerking and gyrating, even including Diplo in her delivery of So Mi Like It. Spice is currently promoting her latest project, Emancipated which features tracks such as Tape Measure, Crop Top, Clap Clap, and Pop Off. The icon recently hosted a fashion show for her clothing brand Graci Noir on VH1’s Lope and Hip Hop: Atlanta. Spice has been a part of the reality series since its seventh season, which aired in 2018.
